Parts of Speech

Do you know the eight parts of speech? They are: noun, verb, pronoun, adjective, adverb, conjunction, preposition, and interjection. Articles like “a” and “the” aren’t included in the eight parts of speech at all!

Knowing and understanding the part of speech of a word helps you use it correctly and understand its meaning. The parts of speech are also on the Common Core State Standards. The CCSS require that second graders and older students know the eight parts of speech.

It’s fun to test your knowledge of the parts of speech with  games like Story Blanks. You provide a word that is the called-for part of speech and then Story Blanks will put your words into a story. When you’re finished, you’ll have a zany tale to read to your friends.

Another good parts of speech game is Homophones Parts of Speech. You’ll have to prove you know which sound-alike is which by picking the correct part of speech!
